LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 3 nationally ranked Tufts University set its own team scoring record for the second game this season, as the Jumbos overpowered the Bates men's lacrosse team by a 31-7 score Saturday afternoon at Garcelon Field.
Tufts (4-0, 3-0 NESCAC) peppered Bates (1-2, 0-2 NESCAC) with 81 shots to the Bobcats' 42 shots, resulting in the most goals ever scored against the Bobcats in a game, breaking the former record of 30 set by Connecticut College in 1994. The Jumbos cleared the ball successfully on 30 of 31 attempts and took advantage of 28 Bates turnovers. They broke the former team record of 29 goals in a game, set April 10 against Colby.
Mac Bredahl led Tufts with 10 points on two goals and eight assists, while Max Waldbaum tallied six goals and added an assist. Sixteen players scored for the visitors, with Bryce Adam and Matt Boccardo adding four and three goals, respectively.
Wil Masterson scored a goal and added an assist, and
Jack Lousararian tallied two assists to share Bates' team lead in points.
Chris Costello won 16 of 32 faceoffs and led all players with 11 ground balls.
The first eight minutes of action made it appear as though the game would be closer. The Jumbos got on the scoreboard first with goals by Adam and Waldbaum, but the Bobcats scored three of the next four goals to even the game at 3-3.
Alex Neville got Bates on the board on an assist from
Mick Burden at the 12:04 mark. After the 9:00 mark, Bates attackers caused a turnover near Tufts' goal. The loose ball rolled to Masterson in front of the goal and he put it away for the easy score. With 6:43 to go in the period, Lousararian fed
Malcolm Klingbeil for a tying goal.
Tufts won the ensuing faceoff and retook the lead for good less than a minute later, as Treiber hooked up with Waldbaum. A minute later, Waldbaum fed Jack Boyden for a two-goal lead. Tufts' run snowballed into eight straight goals, giving the Jumbos an 11-3 lead on Cam Kelleher's unassisted tally with seven seconds left in the opening quarter.
Bates created a bit of momentum to start the second period. Lousararian made a great pass to a cutting
Alex Horowitz, who scored at the doorstep in the opening minute. Then
Jackson Sell's unassisted goal narrowed the deficit to 11-5.
Tufts regained the eight-goal lead in less than two minutes, with Treiber scoring the Jumbos' first man-up goal and Waldbaum tallying again. Bredahl assisted on four straight Tufts scores as the lead grew to 16-5, and Adam's tally with 4:45 to go made it 17-5, where the score stayed until halftime.
Tufts' run didn't slow down during intermission, however, as the Jumbos outscored Bates 7-0 in the third quarter and added the first five goals of the fourth quarter, a massive run of 18 unanswered goals in all. Senior
Stephen Brackett tallied his first collegiate goal with 5:18 remaining to end the drought.
Garrett FitzSimons started in goal for Bates and made five saves in the first quarter. First-year
Spencer Wood came on for 39 minutes between the pipes and tallied 14 saves while allowing 17 goals. Senior
