Sydney Phillips were the leading attackers for either side with 12 and 11 kills apiece, but Bowdoin prevailed over the Bates volleyball team 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-17) nevertheless in a non-conference match between the rivals played Wednesday night in Morrell Gymnasium.
Bates (5-8) attacked at a respectable .139 percentage, their fifth-best mark of the season, and the eighth-highest allowed this season by the Polar Bears (9-3).
The teams will face each other again in a NESCAC matchup at Bates on Oct. 30.
Lowther (Wyckoff, N.J.) had 12 kills and three errors on 31 attempts (.290), while Phillips (Plainville, Mass.) posted 11 kills with four errors on 27 attempts (.259). Junior

Charlotte Morris (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) posted 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Bowdoin jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set, but Bates clawed back to within two points, at 24-22, on a block by first-year
Julia Neumann (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore
Alma Mackic (Lake Forest, Ill.) on Allyson Hawkins. An ensuing Bates attack error ended the Bobcats' threat to win the set.
Bates scored five points in a row, with a run of three service aces by Lowther, early in the second set for an 8-5 lead. Bowdoin erased it with three straight points of its own, followed by a 5-1 run that put it in front 14-10, with back-to-back aces served by Ella Haugen. Kills by Lowther and Mackic closed the gap to 15-13, but the Polar Bears ended the set with a 10-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Bowdoin's Joy Liu served for the first five points of the third set, a streak broken by first-year
Katie Kortekaas's (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) kill. Bates rallied to take a 9-8 lead with solo blocks by Neumann and Mackic before Bowdoin retook the lead for good at 10-9 on a kill by Lange, part of a 7-1 Bowdoin run toward a 15-10 lead. Bates could get no closer than within three points the rest of the way.
Cori Gray had eight kills to lead Bowdoin. Haugen and Liu split setting with 18 and 14 assists, respectively, and Sophia Pahl had a team-high 16 digs to go with six kills.
Bates will play only its second home match of the season Friday at 6:30pm against Hamilton. They'll remain home on Saturday to host Williams at 2pm.
