Hot Cardinals douse volleyball 3-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan University won its sixth straight match in a 3-0 defeat of the visiting Bates College volleyball team on Saturday afternoon. The host Cardinals won by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-10.

The Cardinals (9-1, 4-1 NESCAC) attacked at a season-best .390 rate, totaling 48 kills on 100 attack attempts with only nine errors. The Bobcats (5-7, 1-4 NESCAC) were limited to a .030 attack percentage with 18 kills on 100 attempts.

Junior setter Emma Eide (Ramsey, N.J.)and first-years Alyssa Lowther (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Julia Neumann (Norwell, Mass.) shared the team lead with four kills apiece. Adding three kills apiece were first-year and juniors Catie Sanchez (Pasadena, Calif.) and Charlotte Morris (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). 

Senior Megan Seabury (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the Bobcats with 14 digs and first-year Kate Hansen (Menlo Park, Calif.) had a match-high four service aces, giving her a team-high 29 aces on the season.

Bella Ahearn tallied nine kills on 11 attempts (.818) to lead the Wesleyan attack. Maddie Kurke also had nine kills, while Brina Kuslak added eight and Mariko Tanaka had seven on 10 attempts (.700). Maya Lopansri had 37 assists and Jenna Otaola led the hosts with 20 digs.

The loss ended Bates' modest winning streak at three in a row. The Bobcats will resume their schedule on Wednesday at 7pm with a non-conference match at Bowdoin (the rivals' NESCAC match will be played at Bates on Oct. 30).
