Men's soccer tallies 26 shots in 1-0 loss to UMF

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's soccer team controlled the game from start to finish, but failed to convert any of their 26 shot attempts into points in a 1-0 home loss to the University of Maine at Farmington Tuesday night.

Bates (6-7) tallied 13 shots in the first half and 13 more in the second half. The Beavers (9-2-1) only tallied seven shots but they made the most of their chances with five shots on goal. The Bobcats only recorded seven shots on goal.

In the 30th minute of action, the Beavers got the only goal they needed. Gracien Mukwa pushed the ball quickly up the far side of the field and fired a shot past the diving Bates keeper to the lower left side of the net. The ball probably would have gone in regardless, but Yusuf Mohamed made sure it did, deflecting the ball home for his sixth goal of the season.

UMF goalkeeper Bradley Neal turned in a strong performance with seven saves and he intercepted a number of crosses as well. The Bobcats repeatedly threatened to score throughout the match. But shots went high and wide all evening at Garcelon Field. Senior captain Owen Keleher (Corrales, N.M.) paced Bates with six shots. Fellow captain Alec Szwarcewicz (Newton, Mass.) finished with three shots, including one on goal. Sophomore Luca Antolini (Yarmouth, Maine) made four saves between the pipes for the Bobcats.

This marks the first time Bates men's soccer has lost to UMF since 1984 although the teams do not play every year.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host Williams in NESCAC action at 1:30pm on Russell Street Field.
