AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore
Charlotte Jones and junior
Elizabeth Patrick both found the back of the net in a 3-2 loss for the Bates women's soccer team Sunday at No. 20 nationally ranked Amherst.
The Bobcats (2-6-2, 1-5 NESCAC) gave the Mammoths (9-1-1, 5-1-1 NESCAC) all they could handle, matching Amherst every step of the way as both teams finished with eight shots on the day.
Amherst's Ruby Hastie opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute on an assist from Kim Zhou. Then the Mammoths grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute on a Sarah Sullivan goal, with an assist to Alexa Juarez.
Despite trailing 2-0, the Bobcats refused to back down. In the 66th minute, junior
Cece Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) found Jones (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) for the latter's first goal of her collegiate career.
The Mammoths answered in the 76th minute on a tic-tac-toe goal from Abby Schwartz with assists to Sierra Rosado and Patience Kum. Just over three minutes later, Patrick (Ipswich, Mass.) recorded an unassisted tally, her team-leading third goal of the year.
Bates had a chance for the equalizer in the 86th minute but Amherst's Mika Fisher stopped first-year
Lily Houser's (Worthington, Ohio) shot.
Fisher tallied two saves for the Mammoths while senior
Kat Nuckols (Los Angeles) finished with three saves for Bates.
The Bobcats are back in action Thursday when they host Thomas College at 3:30pm at Russell Street Field.
