AMHERST, Mass. -- The No. 13 nationally ranked Amherst men's soccer team scored one goal in the first half and one in the second half to defeat the Bates Bobcats 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Bobcats (6-5, 3-4 NESCAC) recorded nine shots, three on goal, in the loss. Amherst (9-1-1, 5-1-1 NESCAC) tallied 17 shots, with eight on goal.
Ignacio Cubeddu gave the Mammoths the lead for good in the 28th minute on an assist from Alex Shahmirzadi. First-year
Sam Assantha (Manchester, N.H.) had a chance for the Bobcats in the 44th minute but was denied by Amherst keeper Kofi Hope-Gund.
Senior captain
Owen Keleher (Corrales, N.M.) had the first opportunity of the second half, with Hope-Gund making the stop in the 47th minute. Keleher paced Bates with three shots, one on goal.
German Giammattei added to the Amherst lead in the 81st minute, on a tic-tac-toe goal with assists to Cubeddu and Jonny Novak.
First-year goalkeeper
Bruce David (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made six saves for the Bobcats. Hope-Gund finished with three saves for Amherst.
The Bobcats return to action this Saturday when they host Wesleyan at 1:30pm on Russell Street Field.
