Baseball's multiple rallies not enough as Nichols sweeps Bates in doubleheader

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team dropped a pair of close games to Nichols College Saturday at the New England Baseball complex, falling 7-6 on a walk-off single in game one and 8-6 in 10 innings in game two.

In both games, the Bobcats (1-6) rallied from big deficits to tie the score, only to see the Bison (3-1) emerge victorious each time.

Bates visits Endicott Sunday for a doubleheader that gets underway at noon.

Game One: Nichols 7, Bates 6 (7 innings)

Patrick Chen See singled in Will Kleinhenz in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bison a 7-6 victory over the Bobcats in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Down 6-3 entering the top of the seventh, Bates rallied to tie the game. With one out, sophomore Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) got hit by a pitch. First-year Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) drew a walk and sophomore Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass.) singled to right field, loading the bases.

Senior Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) drew a walk, scoring Jareno and cutting the deficit to 6-4. Then, with Bates down to its final out, senior Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) singled in two runs, tying the game at six.

But the Bison answered right away in the bottom of the seventh. Kleinhenz tripled off new pitcher senior Miles Michaud (Madison, Conn.) and an infield single and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Chen See singled down the left field line, scoring Kleinhenz and ending the game.

Senior captain Nolan Collins (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) started on the mound for Bates and got a no-decision, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings pitched. He walked two and struck out six.

Kleinhenz's RBI single in the first and Kyle Bouchard's RBI double in the third gave the Bison a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats got one back in the fifth against Nichols starter Jack Dicenso. And the one run came in a loud manner when first-year John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) launched the first home run of his collegiate career.

Brad Ellis' two-RBI single in the bottom half the frame extended the Bison lead to 4-1.

Gotti doubled to lead off the top of the sixth and one out later junior Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.) reached on an infield single. Torres grounded out, moving both runners up 90 feet. Then Nowak continued his big day at the plate with a two-RBI single to center, cutting the Bison lead to 4-3.

Nichols tallied two runs in the bottom half of the frame, taking a 6-3 lead thanks to an RBI single from DJ Caron and an RBI fielder's choice from Christian Naccari.

Brodie Altiere (1-0) got the final two outs of the top of the seventh, earning the win. Michaud (0-1) took the loss after failing to retire a batter in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bison tallied 13 hits in the game, with their first five hitters in the lineup recording two hits each. Bates finished the game with 10 hits. Gotti went 2-3 with a double, a run scored and a walk. Avila also went 2-3 at the plate and Nowak finished 3-4 with a home run and three runs batted in.

Game Two: Nichols 8, Bates 6 (10 innings)

The Bobcats rallied from a 6-0 deficit to force extra innings, but the Bison plated two in the top of the 10th to defeat Bates 8-6 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Senior Mark Russell (Westford, Mass.) tossed a pair of shutout innings before the Bison got to him in the 10th. With one away, Brad Ellis doubled to right center. Kleinhenz drew a walk and the Bobcats brought in sophomore Jared Pantalony (Brooklyn, N.Y.) out of the bullpen. Nathaniel Cormier greeted him with a single, driving in Ellis. Then with two away and runners at second and third, the Bison added to the lead on a Michael Sobolewski single to left. Jareno gunned down Cormier at the plate to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Avila drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the 10th but Bison pitcher Brendan Duffy (1-0) retired the next batter, ending the game.

The Bison scored three in the third inning and three more in the fourth off Bates first-year starting pitcher Matt Spind (Clarksville, Md.), taking a 6-0 lead. But Spind settled down and shut out the Bison for the next three innings, allowing the Bobcats to rally.

With one out and nobody on in the bottom of the fourth, Torres smacked his first collegiate home run, making the score 6-1. Nowak and senior Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) followed with back-to-back infield singles. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball and junior Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) singled in Nowak, trimming the deficit to four.

Beal singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and promptly stole second base. He scored when Jareno reached on an error by the Nichols shortstop, making the score 6-3 in favor of the Bison.

Nowak continued his huge day in the bottom of the seventh. Senior captain Will Sylvia (Newton, Mass.) got hit by a pitch to start the frame. Torres drew a walk and Nowak clobbered his second home run of the day, a three-run blast that tied the game at six.

Neither team scored again until the 10th, as Russell (0-1) and Duffy both proved to be effective relievers out of the bullpen.

The Bobcats out-hit the Bison 15-10 in game two, with Jamieson and Torres tallying three hits each. Nowak, Gotti and Beal all recorded multi-hit games as well. But Bates left 15 runners on base while the Bison only left five.
