BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team bounced back from getting shutout 7-0 in game one to defeat Endicott 9-3 in game two of Sunday's doubleheader between the two teams at North Field.
Bates (2-7) returns to action this Saturday when the Bobcats visit Bard for a doubleheader that gets started at noon.Â
Game One: Endicott 7, Bates 0
Endicott's Rian Schwede scattered eight hits and did not walk anyone in a complete game 7-0 shutout of the Bobcats in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Bates starter junior Peter Schuldt (Winnetka, Ill.) tossed two shutout innings before the Gulls got to him for four runs in the third. John Duffy started the frame with an infield single. Then Matthew McKinley singled up the middle and Thomas Barbieri got hit by a pitch. Matt Bald singled in a pair of runs and Joseph Millar drove in another run with a fielder's choice on a grounder to second. Millar advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when Kyle Brennan doubled him home.
Up 4-0, the Gulls added two in the fourth, chasing Schuldt (0-1) from the game. Justin Wardwell tripled down the right field line to start the frame and one out later he scored on a wild pitch. McKinley smacked a solo home run and Endicott led 6-0.
With two outs, the Bobcats brought in senior Ryan Moralejo (Miami, Fla.) out of the bullpen and he tossed three and a third innings, allowing one run on three hits. Senior Cameron Carlson (Watertown, Conn.) worked around a couple of walks and a hit to pitch a scoreless eighth inning.
The Bobcats failed to string any hits together against Schwede (1-1) in the loss. Sophomore Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) went 3-4 at the dish and first-year Tyler Attal (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished 1-3 on the day. First-year Henry Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) recorded Bates' only extra-base hit the of contest, a two-out double in the sixth.
The Gulls tallied 10 hits in the game, led by McKinley going 3-3 with three runs scored and a walk.
Game one of the doubleheader took under two hours to complete despite being a nine-inning contest, coming in at 1:57.Â
Game Two: Bates 9, Endicott 3
Junior Christian Beal and sophomore Kevin Lucey both homered and the Bobcats used six different pitchers in a 9-3 victory over Endicott in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.
The Bobcats never trailed in the contest but the Gulls (4-4) kept it close until Bates exploded for five runs in the seventh inning.
Bates led 3-2 with two outs and nobody on in the top of the seventh. But Endicott reliever Kyle Wollman got a little wild, hitting Lucey (Topsfield, Mass.) with a pitch. Then Wollman walked senior Giovanni Torres (North Haven, Conn.) and hit first-year John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) with a pitch to load the bases.
Alexander Mandrus entered the game out of the bullpen for the Gulls and Bates pinch hitter junior Noah Loughlin (Mililani, Hawaii) greeted him with a two-RBI double to left, making the score 5-2 in favor of Bates. Senior Jon Lindgren (Plainville, Conn.) drew a walk and on the play Nowak scored due to a wild pitch.
Nicholas Borkowski entered the game out of the bullpen and walked Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) before giving up a two-RBI single to junior Zach Avila (San Francisco, Calif.), extending the Bobcat lead to 8-2.
Lucey launched his first collegiate home run in the top of the eighth to round out the scoring for the Bobcats.
First-year Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) made his collegiate debut and pitched two shutout innings to start the game for Bates. He got immediate run support when Beal led off the game with a solo home run. Endicott starter Joseph Oriola (0-1) only pitched two thirds of an inning but took the loss as Beal's homer put Bates up for good.Â
The Bobcats added a pair of runs in the second inning against Gull reliever Max Tarlin. Senior Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) walked to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later he stole third and scored when junior Colin Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) reached on an error with two outs in the inning. Coyne advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Jamieson single through the left side.
Sophomore Braden Karess (Boxborough, Mass.) pitched the third and fourth innings for Bates, allowing just an unearned run. Sophomore Ian Tolis (Madison, Conn.) worked a scoreless fifth inning but allowed back-to-back singles to start the sixth. Senior Will Slayne (Dedham, Mass.) entered the game and the Gulls bunted both runners up 90 feet. Kyle Brennan singled in a run before Slayne got a strikeout and a groundout to end the frame. Then Bates put the game away in the top of the seventh.
After getting all three outs in the sixth, Slayne (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win.Â
Sophomore Grant Iuliano (Waltham, Mass.) and first-year Sam Hough (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) pitched the eighth and ninth innings respectively for Bates. Hough walked a pair but also struck out a pair in his inning of work.
The Bobcats recorded seven hits and the Gulls finished with six hits in the contest. Endicott was hurt by five errors in the field, although the miscues only led to one unearned run. Bates also drew eight walks at the plate. Lucey had the best game at the plate for the Bobcats, going 2-4 with two runs scored, a home run and an RBI. Avila and Loughlin both drove in a pair of runs.
