Women's lacrosse defeats Babson 14-10 in home opener

LEWISTON, Maine -- Seven different players found the back of the net and the Bates women's lacrosse team used a big first half to defeat visiting Babson 14-10 Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.

The Bobcats (1-1) went on a 6-0 run midway through the first half to take control of the game. Trailing 3-2, first-year Chloe Robinson (North Salem, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal to even the contest at three with 21:02 left in the first half. Less than a minute later, senior captain Avery MacMullen (New Haven, Conn.) gave Bates the lead for good on an assist from junior Summer Dias (West Newton, Mass.) with 20:10 on the clock.

Bates continued the scoring outburst when junior Margaret Smith (Wilton, Conn.) found junior Kathryn Grennon (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) for the latter's first goal of the night, extending the lead to 5-3 with 19:35 remaining in the half.

Just over six minutes later, Robinson scored another unassisted goal and Dias and senior captain Liv Sandford (Kennebunk, Maine) followed with goals of their own shortly after, making the score 8-3 in favor of Bates with 10:30 to go in the opening 30 minutes.

The Bobcats led the Beavers (1-1) 9-5 at halftime and matched their biggest lead of the game when sophomore Jordyn Tveter (Topsfield, Mass.) took the opening draw control of the second half, raced down the field, and scored in just 11 seconds.

Babson didn't go away. With the score at 10-5, the Beavers went on a 3-0 run, keyed by a pair of goals from Sophia McCann. Georgia Salvatore's free position goal with 17:12 left in the game made the score 10-8 in favor of Bates.

Smith broke the run with an unassisted tally and the Bobcats pulled away down the stretch on goals from Tveter, Grennon and Sandford.

Robinson and Tveter led the way with three goals each for Bates. Smith added two goals and two assists. Grennon and Sandford both scored a pair of goals as well, with Grennon notching an assist.
