Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) scored a program record 45 points, but the Bates College women's basketball team was edged by Williams 84-81 in overtime in a NESCAC game played in Alumni Gym tonight.
Bates fell to 12-11 overall and 3-6 in NESCAC play, but at the end of the night the Bobcats had clinched eighth place in the conference and the final spot in next weekend's NESCAC Championship quarterfinals. The Bobcats host Middlebury for their final NESCAC game tomorrow, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
Williams improved to 17-6 this season and 6-3 in the NESCAC.Â
Graff surpassed the previous Bates record for points in a game of 42 set by Meredith Kelly vs. Maine-Augusta on Dec. 7, 2013. Graff made six three pointers, just one shy of the Bates record for threes in a game. She added three assists and a game-high five steals. Sophomore Ariana Dalia (Brick, N.J.) scored 10 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had two blocks. Senior Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded seven points, seven rebounds and shared a team-high with four assists.
Maggie Meehan led Williams with 22 points and logged a game-high eight assists. Mikaela Topper added 15 points and five rebounds. Maddy Mandyck snagged a game-high 12 boards, had four assists, two steals and notched 10 points. Emily Chang chipped in 12 points.
The back and forth game featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes. Williams built its largest lead of the game with just under five minutes left in the second quarter. Two made free throws by Meehan followed by a three-pointer by Chang put the Ephs up by seven at 31-24 with 4:46 left in the first half. However, the Bobcats answered with a three-pointer and jumper by Graff to get within two. Morgan Dauk sunk a layup for Williams, but layups from Graff and junior Taylor McVeigh (Hanson, Mass.) knotted the game at 33 going into halftime.
It was Bates' turn to build its largest leads of the game in the third quarter. The Bobcats led by eight twice. A 7-0 run by Bobcats gave them a 49-41 lead with 4:31 left in the third, and two free throws by Graff made it 51-43 with 3:43 remaining. The Ephs battled back closing out the third quarter down by three at 58-55.
The Bobcats led by five with 3:18 left in the fourth quarter. With 1:38 remaining, a jumper by Chang tied the game up for Williams at 66-66. She followed with a lay up to give the Ephs a two-point advantage with 37 seconds to go. With 28 seconds on the clock, Graff was fouled and knocked down her two free throws to send the game to overtime.
Graff started off overtime making one of two free throws and Dalia made a layup to give Bates a 71-68 lead with 3:54 on the clock. Katie Brule made two shots from the line to get Williams within one and a steal and layup by Mandyck gave the Ephs a 72-71 advantage with 2:34 remaining. Bates scored the next three points on two free throws by Graff and one by Dalia, but Gabby Martin answered with a three for the Ephs to make it 75-74 with 1:48 left. Graff went to the line again making two for Bates, but once Meehan connected on two free throws to answer for Williams. A jumper by Meehan put the Ephs up 79-76 with 44 seconds to go. Topper added two more free throws for Williams at the 27 second mark. Graff was fouled and made her two shots to get Bates within three with 23 seconds remaining. The Bobcats fouled twice in the final 18 seconds and the Ephs missed three of four free throws. Binkhorst sunk a three for Bates with three seconds to go to get the Bobcats within one. The Bobcats fouled and Topper made both free throws with one second to go. Bates wasn't able to convert in the final second.
The Bobcats shot 44.1 percent from the floor and 43.8 percent from three. The Ephs shot 44.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from deep.
