Women's basketball closes out regular season with 71-67 OT win over Middlebury

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team secured a 71-67 overtime victory over Middlebury College in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Gym.

The Bobcats improved to 13-11 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC play, while the Panthers finished the season with a 12-12 record and a 1-9 mark in conference play.

Sophomore Mia Roy (Bedford, N.H.) led Bates with 19 points, sophomore Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) added 18 points and eight assists, while junior Julia Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn.) chipped in with 11. Junior Taylor McVeigh (Hanson, Mass.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Ariana Dalia (Brick, N.J.) grabbed seven boards and added eight points.

Maya Davis scored a game-high 26 points and collected a team-high 11 boards. Betsy Knox chipped in 17 points, a team-high five assists and 10 rebounds.

The teams were tied 67-67 with 1:12 left in overtime. A jumper by Middlebrook put the Bobcats up by two with 47 seconds remaining. Middlebury missed a pair of free throws, and the Bobcats missed a jumper. Following a Panther timeout, Roy had a steal, was fouled and then connected on two free throws with three seconds remaining for the final score.

The first quarter was back and forth featuring four ties. Bates had a 5-0 run to close out the quarter for a 24-20 advantage. First-year Jenna Berens (Durham, Conn.) connected on two free throws and senior Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) drained a three in the final minute of the quarter.

Tied at 24-24 in the second quarter, the Bobcats went on an 8-0 run behind a pair of threes by Roy with 3:58 on the clock. The advantage grew to as many as 10 before Bates claimed a 36-28 lead into the break.

The Bobcats led by as many as eight with 4:22 left in the third on a three pointer by Middlebrook. The Panthers battled back to get within one with 14 seconds to go. First-year Brianna Gadaleta (Chappaqua, N.Y.) closed out the quarter with a lay up to make it 45-42 going into the fourth.

The fourth was another back-and-forth battle, it was tied at 61-61 with 1:13 remaining. Each team had a chance to take the lead, but neither team was able to secure the win, forcing the game into overtime.

The Bobcats shot 35.2 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from three-point range. Bates went 13-for-13 from the free throw line. The Panthers shot 40.3 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from behind the arc.

The Bobcats have earned a spot in the NESCAC Tournament. Bates will play a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Bobcats will either be the No. 7 seed or the No. 8 seed depending on the outcome of the Wesleyan vs. Bowdoin game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
