MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates men's track and field team won two events and scored in 10 Saturday at Tufts' Branwen Smith-King Invitational. Bates scored 56.5 points in the meet, fifth-most among 22 teams.
Scoring points with top-eight event performances for the Bobcats were:
- Junior captain John Rex (Andover, Mass.) won the weight throw with a top effort of 18.14 meters (59'6.25") on his sixth and final attempt. Rex finished more than two feet ahead of runner-up Ryan Nall of MIT.
- Sophomore John Mieszczanski (Chelmsford, Mass.) won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:34.43, 0.55 seconds ahead of runner-up Matthew Kerst of Coast Guard.
- Junior Ryan Nealis (London, England) placed second in the 800 meters (1:59.57).
- First-year Daniel McConnell (Califon, N.J.) placed fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:37.98).
- Finishing fourth in the 4x400 relay for Bates were junior Elijah Coyne (Newtown, Pa.), sophomore Liam Evans (Sauquoit, N.Y.), first-year Owen Glover (Andover, Mass.) and first-year Peter Ackley (New Albany, Ohio) in a time of 3:31.83.
- Senior captain Beaufils Kimpolo-Pene (Bronx, N.Y.) placed sixth in the high jump (6'2.75")
- Junior captain Brendan Donahue (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) tied for sixth place in the pole vault (13'7.25").
- Sophomore John Everett (Winchester, Mass.) took sixth place in the shot put (45'2.25").
- Senior Gabe Benson (Maplewood, N.J.) placed seventh in the 1,000 meters (2:40.93).
- Finishing second out of six teams in the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:12.48 were Benson, McConnell, Nealis and junior captain Jeremy Bennett (Windham, Maine).
Next up for the Bobcats are the Maine State Championships on Saturday night. The meet starts at 6pm at Bowdoin.
