LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore
Mia Roy scored a game-high 22 points but the Bates women's basketball team couldn't keep up with No. 1 nationally ranked Tufts in a 65-49 loss to the Jumbos Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
Tufts (18-0, 4-0 NESCAC) never trailed, shooting 46% from the floor and holding the Bobcats (9-8, 1-3 NESCAC) to 26.3% shooting in the contest.
Roy (Bedford, N.H.) hit 4-8 from three-point range on the day and poured in 10 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, when Bates outscored Tufts 12-8.
Sophomore Meghan Graff (South Portland, Maine) tallied 11 points, three rebounds and a team-high four assists. And senior captain Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) added 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two steals.
Four Jumbos finished in double figures, with Erica DeCandido leading the way, scoring 16 points on 5-9 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds. She also dished out four assists. Emily Briggs tallied 15 points on 6-12 shooting and Molly Ryan finished with 12 points on 5-11 shooting. Ryan grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, recorded two steals and blocked two shots. Sofia Rosa added 11 points off the bench on 5-8 shooting.
Ryan hit a three and Briggs added a layup to put Tufts up 5-0 in the first quarter. Roy got the Bobcats on the board with a layup before Ryan hit a jumper and DeCandido made a pair of free throws to make the score 9-2.
Bates battled back and Roy made two of three free throws with 4:15 left in the first, cutting the Tufts lead to 13-11. The Jumbos went on a 6-0 run before Graff's layup made the score 19-13 at the end of one.
The Jumbos took a 10-point lead into halftime and led by as many as 22 points in the second half.
Points in the paint was the biggest difference between the two teams. Tufts scored 34 points in the paint and held the Bobcats to 16.
Bates is back in action Friday night when the Bobcats visit Colby for a 7pm tip.
