HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates senior Ben Rosen not only repeated as an All-NESCAC selection in both singles and doubles for the third time in his career, but he added the Clarence Chaffee Sportsmanship Award as well on Thursday, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its postseason awards.

Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) was joined by sophomore Jacob Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) as First Team All-NESCAC selections in doubles. The NESCAC announcement came the day after the pair were selected to play in the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship tournament taking place May 24-26. (Rosen was also picked to play in the Men's Singles Championship.)

The Clarence Chaffee Sportsmanship Award is given annually to the individual who best combined and displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship. Rosen -- an All-NESCAC First Team honoree in singles for the third time and in doubles for the second time -- is the fourth Bobcat to win the award, joining head coach Paul Gastonguay (1989), Ben Lamanna (2002) and Timmy Berg (2014).

Rosen, a three-time All-American, went 11-3 in 2017-18 in his third season playing singles at the No. 1 position. He has beaten opponents from Amherst, Tufts, Trinity, Mary Washington, Johns Hopkins, Brandeis and MIT, among others.

Rosen and Kauppila teamed up on a 9-7 record against the top doubles teams from Bates' highly challenging schedule (the Bobcats finished 8-9 as a team, with 10 of their matches played against nationally ranked opponents). Rosen and Kauppila have defeated opponents from Amherst, Tufts, Brandeis and MIT, among others. As a singles player, Kauppila went 2-0 at Bates' No. 3 position and 8-4 at the No. 4 position.
