No. 14 Bowdoin tops No. 30 women's tennis in season finale

LEWISTON, Maine -- No. 14 nationally ranked Bowdoin won 7-2 over the host No. 30 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team on Thursday, ending the host Bobcats' strong season.

Bates finishes the season with a 9-9 overall record, 3-5 in NESCAC play. Bowdoin (9-10, 4-3 NESCAC) will finish the regular season Sunday at home against Tufts.

It was Senior Day for two-year team captain Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine), who was feted by coaches and teammates prior to the match at the outdoor Wallach Tennis Center. The match moved inside Merrill Gymnasium during singles play.

Silverman teamed with junior Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles and fell to Tess Trinka and Izzy Essi 8-3, giving the pair an 8-7 final record at No. 1 singles this season.

Bowdoin swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead. At No. 2, Viv Daniel and Rachel Bercovitch defeated first-year Hannah Sweeney (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) 8-3, dropping the Bates pair to 12-6 on the season. At No. 3, sophomore Suzanne Elfman (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year Haley Washington (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) fell 8-4 to Tasha Christ and Sasa Jovanovic, dropping to 8-10 as a rookie duo.

Sweeney defeated Christ 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to pick up Bates' first point, rising to 12-6 as a singles player in her rookie season. Elfman later prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker at No. four singles, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 over Essi.

After Bowdoin had clinched the win with its fifth point, Stone nearly pushed Bercovitch to a third set at third singles, falling 6-2, 7-6 (6). Bowdoin won in straight sets at first, fifth and sixth singles.
