GREENE, Maine -- The Bates rowing teams won seven out of 10 races Sunday against Bowdoin and Colby to clinch the Bobcats' seventh consecutive Presidents Cup in the 22nd edition of the annual regatta hosted at the Bates boathouse in Greene.
The Bobcats have won or shared the Presidents Cup 10 consecutive years going back to 2008. There was no winner in 2012 due to inclement weather and the Bobcats shared it with Bowdoin in 2010.
Sunday started with a pair of novice races, with the men's novice four coming in second to Colby and the women's novice four taking first place over Bowdoin with a time of 8:42.6.
After a short break, the men's second varsity eight raced to the finish in 6:44.7 to defeat Colby's boat that finished in 7:05.69. Then the men's first varsity eight took center stage and won by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 6:37.2. Bates kept the momentum going with the women's first varsity eight clocking in at 7:35.69, finishing well ahead of second place Colby (8:14.23) and nearly two minutes ahead of Bowdoin.
The women's second varsity eight wrapped up the middle session with a victory over the Bobcat third varsity eight and a pair of Colby boats. The W2V8 raced to the finish in 8:04.0 and the third varsity eight came in second with a time of 8:29.6.
After another short break, the women's varsity four finished second to Bowdoin and the women's novice eight took second by just half a second to the Mules.
The Bobcats finished up the day with two straight victories. The men's varsity four clipped Bowdoin with a time of 7:29.0 to the Polar Bears' 7:38.73. In the final race of the regatta, the Bobcat second varsity four checked in with a time of 7:41.0, good for first place ahead of Bowdoin (7:44.1) and Colby (8:00.5).
The Bates men are back in action this Saturday when they compete at Holy Cross against Williams among others. Meanwhile the women and men host the Bates Invitational next Sunday against Middlebury and New Hampshire.
