Baseball held to four hits in 9-3 loss to Puget Sound

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Junior Dan Trulli tallied a pair of hits and senior captain Jake Shapiro drove in a pair of runs but the University of Puget Sound Loggers scored three runs in the first inning and did not look back, defeating the Bates baseball team 9-3 Saturday morning.

The Loggers (4-2) got to Bates starter senior Connor Speed (San Diego, Calif.) in the top of the first. Jack Gries got hit by a pitch to start the frame. Then Cal Muramaru singled him to third and a Mason Quinlan walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Corey Roberts hit into a fielder's choice, driving in Gries for the first run of the game. Hunter Riley drew a walk to load the bases again and Kyle Strash got hit by a pitch to score the second run of the inning. Dylan Salcedo popped up for the second out but Nolan Wiler got hit by a pitch to drive in the third run of the inning.

Speed (0-2) settled down in the second inning, holding the Loggers scoreless while working around an error with a pair of strikeouts.

But after the Loggers got two men on with nobody out in the third on a single and an error, Speed left the game with an injury and senior captain Connor Russell (Cumberland, Maine) entered and struck out a pair of batters to end the frame. One inherited runner did score on an RBI groundout from Salcedo to extend the UPS lead to 4-0.

With one away in the fourth, Gries reached on an infield single. Muramaru got hit by a pitch and a grounder off the bat of Quinlan moved both runners up 90 feet. Roberts delivered a clutch two-out, two-RBI single to make the UPS lead 6-0.

The Bobcats (0-6) finally got to UPS starter Michael Warnick (2-0) in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Kyle Carter (Plantation, Fla.) drew a walk to start the frame and one out later Trulli singled him to third. With two away, sophomore Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) drew a walk to load the bases. Then a passed ball scored Carter for the first Bates run of the game. Shapiro followed with a two-RBI single to cut the UPS advantage to 6-3.

Russell shut down the Loggers until the top of the eighth. With one away, Connor Dunn drew a walk. Gries reached on an error and Muramaru singled to left. Another Bates error on the play allowed a run to score. Junior Justin Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.) entered the game out of the bullpen and a passed ball allowed a second run to score before Foley struck out Quinlan to end the frame.

UPS added another run in the top of the ninth on a Salcedo RBI single to complete the day's scoring.

Bates held the Loggers to seven hits but the Bobcats committed five errors in the field and hit four batters. Sophomore Pat Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) added a pinch hit single and a stolen base in the ninth for the Bobcats but got left stranded.

Andrew Matsueda tossed three innings of shutout ball to earn the save for the Loggers.

The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, March 10 when they take on Worcester St. in a doubleheader in Northboro, Mass.
