MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts University swept both ends of a NESCAC East Division doubleheader on Sunday, as the Bates College softball team's season concluded with losses by scores of 3-1 and 14-1 against the host Jumbos.

Bates finishes the season with a 10-18 record overall, 1-11 in conference games. Tufts (20-14, 8-4 NESCAC East) tied for second place in the division with Trinity but lost the tiebreaker with the Bantams, leaving the Jumbos out of the four-team NESCAC Championship for the first time in the tournament's 18-year history.

Bates' lone senior, Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) finishes her career with 124 hits, tying Karen Ullmann '12 for third place on the team's all-time list and only three shy of the record owned by Stacia Saniuk '09. She also ranks second in team history in doubles (32), third in total bases (189) and fourth in extra-base hits (45).

Inlow led the Bobcats in batting average at a career-best .409, to go with team highs in home runs (4) and runs batted in (20). She also registered an outstanding final season in the field, making only two errors as the Bobcats' starting shortstop for a fielding percentage of .981.

Game 1 Recap

Tufts scored three runs on five hits in the third inning off of Bates first-year starting pitcher Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine), and that was enough for the victory as the Jumbos outhit the Bobcats 8-5.

Inlow scored Bates' lone run in the fourth, reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring when junior Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) reached first on an error. Bates put runners on second and third before Tufts starter Gillian O'Connor (9-5) ended the rally on a flyout by sophomore Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.).

Pelletier finished her impressive rookie campaign by going six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks. Pelletier went 6-10 on the season with a 2.55 earned run average, one save and 83 strikeouts, the third-highest single-season total in team history.

Sophomore Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 2-for-4 to lead Bates' six-hit attack.

Game 2 Recap

Tufts answered Bates' run in the top of the first inning with three in the bottom of the first, followed by five runs in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth en route to a five-inning victory.

Cassie Ruscz batted 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs for Tufts, while Maggie Hoffman was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.

Russo led off the game with an infield single, reaching second base on Inlow's single. First-year Julia Treadwell (Falmouth, Maine) then singled to center and Russo scored on an outfield error. The sophomore outfielder Russo finished the year with a .398 batting average and team highs in runs (21) and stolen bases (7).
