Women's tennis shuts out Colby for most NESCAC wins since 2010

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match and its third straight NESCAC contest on Tuesday, defeating rival Colby 9-0 in Merrill Gymnasium.

Bates (7-10, 4-4 NESCAC) earned their fourth NESCAC victory for the first time since the 2010 season. The Bobcats will host Wesleyan University on Saturday in the regular-season finale at 10am. Bates remains eligible for a top-six finish in the NESCAC, which would earn an invitation to the NESCAC Championship tournament. 

The Mules finish the season with an 8-7 record and a 1-6 mark in conference play.

The rivals last matched up on March 29, 2016 in Waterville, where the Mules prevailed 6-3.

Bates won all three doubles matches, with the closest score being at No. 1, where junior Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) and sophomore Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) defeated Gabriela Venditti and Lydia Venditti 8-3. At No. 2, senior Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year Isabelle Rovinski (New York, N.Y.) downed Maddie Lupone and Jamie Pine 8-1, while at No. 3 doubles senior Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) teamed with first-year Lauren Hernandez (Chester, N.J.) for in an 8-2 defeat of Aleks Piiebe and Emily Dyckman.

The Bobcats didn't lose a set in singles play:

  • Silverman defeated Lydia Venditti 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles;
  • Erbafina topped Gabriela Venditti 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2;
  • Stone defeated Lupone 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3;
  • Rovinski shut out Piibe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4;
  • Rosenthal rolled past Pine 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5;
  • Senior Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) beat Dyckman 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
