LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Kirsten Pelletier struck out seven in a complete game victory in game one and senior Maddie Inlow tallied four hits, including a home run in Tuesday's doubleheader split between the Bates softball team and Husson University.

Bates (10-13) took game one 3-2 and dropped game two 11-5 against the Eagles (24-10).

Game One: Bates 3, Husson 2

Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) struck out seven batters and allowed only two runs on five hits in the circle in the Bobcats' 3-2 victory over Husson in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Bates got on the board against Husson starter Arika Brochu (4-4) in the bottom of the fourth.

Inlow (Falmouth, Maine) singled to start the frame. First-year Julia Treadwell (Falmouth, Maine) followed with a drive that got dropped by the Husson center fielder. Inlow advanced to third and Treadwell ended up at second base on the play.

Junior Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) bunted her way aboard, driving in Inlow to put the Bobcats up 1-0.

In the fifth inning, sophomore Livie Gilbert (Turner, Maine) singled to center leading off the inning and Pelletier helped her own cause by doubling home Gilbert to extend the Bobcat lead to 2-0. Pelletier advanced to third on the throw home and she scored when first-year Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice. The Eagles' throw home on Panepinto's grounder was not in time to get Pelletier.

Husson rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Tamara Aunchman singled through the right side and pinch hitter Morgan Coleman followed with a single of her own. Two outs later, Nicole Andrade singled to load the bases.

Pinch hitter Olivia Maynard singled in two runners to trim the Bobcat lead to 3-2.

But Pelletier (6-7) got Briana Brochu to line out to Panepinto, clinching the win for Bates.

Inlow finished 2-3 with a run scored in the first half of the twin bill. Bates outhit Husson 6-5 in the victory.

Game Two: Husson 11, Bates 5

Inlow smacked a three-run home run but Husson exploded for 11 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Bobcats 11-5 in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Each team scored three runs in the first inning.

Brochu singled to start the top of the first and Chloe Gorey reached on an error. One out later, Aunchman singled in Brochu. Then with two away, Maynard and Kylie Kennedy each singled home a run to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Bobcats answered in their half of the frame. Sophomore Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) drew a leadoff walk. After Panepinto reached on an error, Inlow went deep for her team-leading fourth home run of the season, a shot out to left-center.

With the game tied at three, Husson grabbed the lead for good in the top of the third. With one out, Maynard singled and Kennedy drew a walk. A Bates error allowed a run to score, putting runners at second and third with one away. The Eagles got another run on a RBI grounder and Brochu added an RBI single to make the score 6-3 in favor of Husson.

The Bobcats cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third. With one, Panepinto singled. Inlow followed with a single of her own. Panepinto went from first to third and the throw to the bag got mishandled, allowing Panepinto to score and Inlow to advance all the way to third. Treadwell drove in Inlow with an RBI grounder, making the score 6-5.

The Eagles picked up an insurance run on an Aunchman home run in the fourth and never looked back. They added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to take command.

Bobcat starting pitcher sophomore Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) went the distance for Bates, allowing only three earned runs on the afternoon in cloudy and cold conditions.

Bates is back in action Friday when they host Bowdoin at 4:00 p.m.
