LEWISTON, Maine -- Elizabeth Reed scored a pair of goals and the Tufts University Jumbos tallied three scores in the second half to defeat the Bates women's soccer team 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Field.

The Bobcats (6-5-1, 2-4-1 NESCAC) and Jumbos (7-2-3, 5-1-2 NESCAC) played to a scoreless tie in the first half. However, Tufts out-shot Bates 13-4, forcing senior captain Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) to make five saves in goal. Backup keeper first-year Katherine Nuckols (Los Angeles, Calif.) made a pair of saves in the half after McCarthy left with an injury.

The Bobcats' first shot on goal of the match came in the 26th minute when junior Sarah Gutch (Gaithersburg, Md.) had her shot denied by Tufts keeper Emily Bowers. Bowers made six saves on the day between the pipes for the Jumbos.

McCarthy returned to start the second half for Bates but the Jumbos wasted no time getting on the board.

In the 48th minute, Reed shot from 20 yards out and buried the ball top shelf in the back right corner of the net to put Tufts up 1-0.

The Bobcats tried to respond right away on a shot from sophomore Sarah DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) but Bowers was there again for the save.

The Jumbos added to their lead in the 57th minute when Alessandra Sadler took the ball into the box and passed it to Sophie Lloyd for her seventh goal of the year.

After Reed scored her second goal of the match in the 65th minute, Bates brought Nuckols back in at goalkeeper. McCarthy finished her day with seven saves.

Nuckols held the Jumbos scoreless the remainder of the match, making three more saves to give her five on the afternoon.

DiPillo paced the Bobcats with three shots, including two on goal. First-year So Kim (Thornhill, Ontario) tallied a pair of shots, with one on goal.

The Jumbos finished the match with 24 shots to Bates' nine.

The Bobcats look to bounce back Sunday when they host Amherst at noon on Russell Street Field.
