Men's soccer blanked 3-0 at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Sophomore goalkeeper Robbie Montanaro made 11 saves but the Bates men's soccer team only tallied three shots in a 3-0 loss at Tufts Saturday afternoon.

The Jumbos out-shot Bates 38-3 on the day.

The Bobcats (2-2-1, 0-2 NESCAC) kept the match very close for the first 82 minutes but the Jumbos (1-2-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) scored a pair of late goals to secure the three-point margin of victory.

Tufts scored in the ninth minute to grab an early 1-0 edge. A Bates foul in the box set up a penalty kick for Gaston Becherano. He converted to put the Bobcats in the early hole.

Bates recorded their first shot in the 20th minute of action but the Jumbos blocked sophomore Drew Parsons' (Farmington, Maine) shot attempt.

Despite the Jumbos recording shots early and often, Bates was only down 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) recorded save after save to keep the Bobcats within one goal.

Sophomore Ben Lyons (San Rafael, Calif.) tallied the second shot of the game for Bates in the 55th minute but it sailed high of the goal.

In the 64th minute, junior Justin Yacovino (North Bergen, N.J.) also fired a shot high of the goal.

That was it in terms of offense for the Bobcats. Montanaro continued to make saves but in the 84th minute the Jumbos got another goal from Becherano with an assist from Dexter Eichhorst.

Then Eichhorst scored in the 88th minute wiith an assist from Jack Delaney.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday at Bowdoin when they take on the Polar Bears at 4:00 p.m.
