BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Robbie Montanaro made five saves and senior Matt DiVite scored the equalizer in the beginning of the 87th minute for the Bates men's soccer team in a 1-1 draw with the University of New England Wednesday night.
Bates (2-1-1) out-shot UNE (1-2-2) 17-15 on the evening but found themselves trailing for most of the night.
Senior Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine) recorded the first shot on goal of the match just two minutes and 16 seconds in to the action. UNE goalkeeper Nate Delesdernier made the save though to keep Bates off the scoreboard.
The Bobcats forced Delesdernier to make eight saves in the match.
Montanaro (Belmont, Mass.) made his first save at the 4:47 mark on a Nick Paine header.
In the 21st minute, Callum Heaslewood and Dexter Doucet set up Dan Good with a cross from the right corner that Good headed in to the back of the net for his first goal of the season to put UNE up 1-0.
Bates only recorded one more shot on goal the rest of the half and went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Less than three minutes in to the second half, Erik Holmqvist attemped a header that Montanaro was able to secure for the save, keeping Bates within one goal.
After being out-shot 8-3 in the first half, Bates flipped the script and out-shot UNE 8-4 in the second half.
With exactly four minutes to go in regulation, all those shots finally paid off.
First-year Eric Opoku (Accra, Ghana) and junior Justin Yacovino (North Bergen, N.J.) set the table nicely for Bates. Yacovino found Opoku and the speedster delivered a perfect cross to DiVite (Murray Hill, N.J.) who headed it back across the keeper into the top corner of the net for the second goal of his career.
The match went to overtime and both teams had chances to win it in the golden goal sessions.
UNE had a chance when they slipped the ball past Montanaro only to see the ball sail out-of-bounds to the left of the goal.
Then Bates had a tremendous opportunity in the 109th minute when first-year Beaufils Kimpolo-Pene (Bronx, N.Y.) found junior Max Watson (Yarmouth, Maine) for a header. Watson's header was denied thanks to a nice save by Delesdernier.
That proved to be the final shot for either side in the match as the Bobcats settled for their first draw of the season.
Bates returns to NESCAC play this Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Tufts. UNE hosts Salve Regina Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
