Jeffrey, Abdel Khalek named Athletes of the Year at Senior Athlete Recognition Ceremony

LEWISTON, Maine -- Seniors Hannah Jeffrey and Ahmed Abdel Khalek were named the 2016 Female and Male Athletes of the Year on Saturday, as the Bates Athletic Department presented its end-of-the-year awards at the first Senior Athlete Recognition Ceremony in Alumni Gymnasium.

Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) concludes her career as a three-time All-American -- Bates' first-ever three-time All-America lacrosse player -- as well a two-time First Team All-America selection, another Bates first, and a two-time First Team All-NESCAC selection. 

Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) capped a brilliant career of his own in 2015-16, winning the College Squash Association's individual nationals tournament for the second straight year and winning his final 66 matches, a run that began at the start of his sophomore year. Abdel Khalek won NESCAC Player of the Year honors for an unprecedented fourth time and was 89-2 overall in four years.

The 38 Senior Scholar Award winners from the Class of 2016 are headed by Julia Fisher (women's cross country, track) and Colby Spehler (men's lacrosse), recipients of the 40th Milton L. Lindholm Scholar-Athlete awards as the male and female varsity letter-winning athletes with the highest cumulative grade point averages. 

The graduating honorees also include Hannah Beinecke (field hockey), Camden Black-Ingersoll (men's cross country) Christopher Bradbury (men's alpine skiing), Sarah Brooks (women's rowing), Cara Cappellini (women's lacrosse), David Cappellini (men's lacrosse), Britta Clark (women's Nordic skiing), Katherine Courtney (women's cross country, track), Alexandra Eliopoulos (field hockey), Shannon Griffin (women's track and field), Greggory Heller (men's cross country, track), Matthew Herbst (football), Denise Hui Bon Hoa (women's swimming), Leah Humes (women's soccer), Margaux Joselow (women's rowing), Elizabeth LaVerghetta (women's golf), Emilie Muller (women's rowing), Chelsea Nason (women's basketball), Michael Newton (men's basketball), Emma Noto (women's lacrosse), Kenneth O'Friel (men's lacrosse), Whitney Paine (women's swimming), Jessica Plotnikov (women's golf), Lindsey Prelgovisk (women's swimming), Matthew Proto (men's lacrosse), Ian Ramsay (men's rowing), Elena Schroeder (women's track), Lyle Seebeck (football), Christopher Shaw (men's cross country, track), Stefano Stadlinger (men's lacrosse), Helen Sudkamp-Walker (women's Nordic skiing), Alex Tritell (men's cross country, track), Cristina Vega (field hockey), Brynn Wendel (volleyball), Grace Wright (women's Nordic skiing) and Hannah Zeltner (women's cross country, track).

Hui Bon Hoa and Spehler were also given the Senior Sportsmanship Award.
