Baseball sweeps Colby in Saturday doubleheader

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates baseball team clinched yet another series victory against a rival Maine NESCAC school by sweeping Colby College in a doubleheader on Saturday. Bates took game one 3-1 and beat the Mules (11-20, 4-8 NESCAC) 9-3 in game two.

The wins follow an early season series victory over Bowdoin when Bates took two of three from the Polar Bears. The Bobcats (12-18, 4-7 NESCAC) finish with a 4-2 conference record against Colby and Bowdoin.

Game One: Bates 3, Colby 1

Seniors Samuel Warren and Rob DiFranco pitched well and first-year Daniel Trulli put the Bobcats ahead for good in a 3-1 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Warren (Norfolk, Va.) started the game and three and two thirds innings, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits. He worked around five walks and struck out six batters.

DiFranco (Melrose, Mass.) pitched the final three and a third innings to secure the win. He did not allow a run and only surrendered two hits. DiFranco walked one and struck out five Mules.

Neither team scored until the top of the fourth.

Warren helped his own cause by singling to start the frame. He stole second and advanced to third on an Evan Czopek '16 (Portland, Ore.) single. One out later Trulli (Melrose, Mass.) doubled in both runners to put Bates up 2-0.

The Mules got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With one away, Tyler Starks drew a walk. He advanced to second on a Bates error and moved to third on a fly out. With two away, DiFranco entered the game to pitch but another Bates error allowed Starks to score, cutting the lead to 2-1.

DiFranco got Soren Hanson to hit into an inning ending fielder's choice.

The right-hander tossed a 1-2-3 fifth inning and worked around a walk and a single in the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, Bates got an insurance run when Czopek launched his first career home run.

Colby put a runner at second with two outs in the seventh but DiFranco struck out Dan Csaplar to end the game.

Warren went 2-4 with a run scored at the plate, Czopek finished 2-4 as well with two runs scored, a homer and an RBI. Trulli tallied a 2-2 day at the plate with two runs batted in. Bates out-hit Colby 8-4 in game one.

Game Two: Bates 9, Colby 3

Sophomore left-hander Connor Russell went six strong innings and the Bates offense pounded out 14 hits in a 9-3 victory over the Mules in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

For the second straight game, neither team scored until the fourth inning.

Czpoek and Trulli started the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles. The Bobcats bunted the runners over and first-year Christian Colon (Hamden, Conn.) drove in Czpoek with an RBI ground out.

The Mules responded right away with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Ellenthal tripled to start the frame and scored on a Soren Hanson RBI grounder.

The Bobcats took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. With one away, junior captain Ryan McCarthy (Plaistow, N.H.) singled. Junior Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) followed with a single of his own. Warren continued his excellent doubleheader with an RBI double, putting Bates up 2-1. With two down, Trulli singled home Fox and Warren to extend the Bates advantage to 4-1.

Bates added another run in the top of the sixth. Colon led off with a double. Senior captain Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) singled Colon to third and junior John Dinucci (West Hartford, Conn.) delivered a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Bobcats.

Colby got to within two by plating a run in the sixth and another in the seventh. But Bates pulled away with two in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Trulli singled to start the eighth and junior Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) drew a walk. After the Bobcats bunted the runners over, Reenstierna singled them both home.

In the top of the ninth, Czopek singled with two outs. Pinch runner Jamie Kennedy '19 (Boston, Mass.) stole second base. Trulli drew a walk and Canavan tripled in Kennedy and Trulli to provide the final margin of victory.

Russell (Cumberland, Maine) allowed only two runs (one earned) on two hits over his six innings of work to earn the victory. He walked three and struck out seven.

Sophomore Andrew Freeman (Newton, Mass.) and senior Chris Ward (Pasadena, Calif.) combined to pitch the final three frames, with Ward tossing two and a third innings of shutout ball, to secure the win for Bates.

Five Bates hitters recorded multi-hit games in game two, with Trulli going 3-4 with two runs scored, two runs driven in and a walk. Fox (2-5, 1-R), Czopek (2-5, 1-R), Colon (2-4, 1-R, 1-2B, 1-RBI) and Reenstierna (2-4, 2-RBI) all had big days at the plate for Bates. Every Bates starter either recorded a hit or an RBI in the contest.

The Bobcats host Tufts in their final NESCAC game of the season Sunday at 1:00.
