Russell outstanding on the mound in baseball's 4-2 loss to Saint Joseph's

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Connor Russell threw five innings of shutout ball but Saint Joseph's College scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh against the Bobcats' bullpen to defeat the Bates baseball team 4-2 Wednesday afternoon.

Russell (Cumberland, Maine) allowed only three hits, walking two and striking out four in his second start of the season. The three hits recorded by the Monks (16-10) against Russell were all softly hit, two were infield singles and a third was a blooper that fell in shallow right.

Russell showed his early season start against Lewis & Clark (five innings, two runs on five hits, five K's) was no fluke as he quieted a Monks offense that entered the game hitting .325 as a team.

Meanwhile Bates (10-13) grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Asher MacDonald (Hillsborough, N.C.) got hit by a pitch to start the frame. The Bobcats bunted him to second and with two away senior Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) singled him in to put Bates up 1-0.

Bates loaded the bases after that but could not score.

The Bobcats loaded the bases again in the fourth inning but came away empty. Then in the fifth inning junior Brendon Canavan (Carlisle, Mass.) singled to start the frame. Senior Conor Reenstierna (Lincoln, Mass.) singled as well. Two outs later, pinch hitter Ryan McCarthy '17 (Plaistow, N.H.) singled in Canavan. But Reenstierna got thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.

Senior Chris Ward (Pasadena, Calif.) entered the game out of the bullpen in the top of the sixth and struck out the first batter he faced. Unfortunately the pitch was in the dirt and snuck past the catcher, allowing the batter to reach first. Another wild pitch moved the runner up 90 feet and Taylor Reuillard singled him home to cut the Bates lead to 2-1. Reuillard stole second and advanced to third on a Dennis Meehan single. Meehan stole second and both runners crossed the plate on a two-out, two-RBI single off the bat of Brett Barbati.

Down 3-2, Bates loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but a 1-2-3 double play ended the inning.

Two Bates errors led to another run crossing the plate for the Monks in the top of the seventh.

Senior Mark Cunningham (Canton, Mass.) and Warren tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively but Bates couldn't get anything going offensively.

Each team recorded seven hits and made two errors. The Bobcats left 13 men on base in the loss.

Warren had the best day at the plate for Bates, finishing 2-3 with an RBI and two walks.

The Bobcats resume NESCAC play Friday at 3:00 p.m. when they visit Trinity.
