Women's tennis upends Connecticut College 5-4

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team earned its first NESCAC victory of the season Sunday, upending Connecticut College 5-4 at the Wallach Tennis Center.

The visiting Camels, ranked No. 19 in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, drop to 9-6 (1-3 NESCAC) while Bates rises to 4-10 (1-4 NESCAC).

Bates took two out of three doubles matches to kick off the match. Top doubles team Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) fell 8-5 to Aleksandra Drljaca and Charlotte Marcoux, but the Bobcats won 8-2 at second doubles, with sophomore Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) and junior Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeating Brinley Bartlett and Emily Migliorini. Seniors Emma Mattson (Dana Point, Calif.) and Emma Blakeley (Hope, Maine) scored an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles over Jillian Brigandi and Aneeka Kalia.

In singles competition, Bates swept the top three spots in straight sets. Silverman topped Drljaca 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, while Erbafina dropped Migliorini 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Stone topped Marcoux 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3.

The Camels won in straight sets at fourth and fifth singles, but Bates first-year Hannah Londoner (Westport, Conn.) defeated Mariah Warren 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Bates plays at Wesleyan on Tuesday at 3pm.
