BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates baseball team fell to Husson by a score of 9-7 on Sunday in a back-and-forth contest that saw the Bobcats unable to hold on to two different leads.
John Dinucci '17 (West Hartford, Conn.) went 2-4 with three RBIs in the loss for Bates (5-7).Â
The Eagles (3-5) got on the board in the bottom of the first. Andrew Curran got hit by a pitch to start the frame. A Mike Wong single through the right side moved Curran from first to third. Curran scored on a passed ball.Â
Bates starter Anthony Telesca '17 (Holtsville, N.Y.) retired the next three hitters in order to prevent any further damage.
Bates responded in the top of the second against Husson starter Robert Graff. With one away, Brendon Canavan '17 (Carlisle, Mass.) drew a walk. Asher MacDonald '18 (Hillsborough, N.C.) doubled Canavan to third and Samuel Warren '16 (Norfolk, Va.) drew a walk to load the bases.
Berto Diaz '16 (Carson, Calif.) drove in Canavan with a RBI grounder to tie the game at one.Â
The Bobcats grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth. Leading off the inning, Canavan got hit by a pitch. One out later Warren drew a walk. Diaz reached on an infield single. On the play, a throwing error by Graff allowed Canavan to score. Warren advanced to third and Diaz ended up at second base.
With two away, Ryan McCarthy '17 (Plaistow, N.H.) drew a walk to load the bases. Then Dinucci continued his hot hitting with a two-RBI single up the middle, driving in Warren and Diaz to put Bates up 4-1.Â
The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Ryan Rebar singled to begin the inning. One out later he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sam Huston drew a walk and Christian Corneil drove home Rebar with a sacrifice fly. Telesca got the next batter to ground out, ending the inning with Bates still up 4-2.
Husson's comeback continued in the fifth inning. Curran reached on an infield single. A Bates throwing error on the play allowed him to advance to second. One out later JT Whitten singled up the middle to drive in Curran and cut the Bates lead to 4-3.
With two outs Rebar doubled to deep right, driving in Whitten and tying the game at four.
Bates quickly grabbed the lead again in the sixth. With one away Diaz drew a walk. Eric Vilanova '17 (Bridgeport, Conn.) pinch hit and reached on a fielder's choice. He swiped second and McCarthy drew a walk. That marked the end of the game for Graff. The Eagles brought in Ben Walls (1-1) and Dinucci greeted him with an RBI single to put the Bobcats up 5-4.
Telesca went five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two. Despite leaving with the lead, Telesca got a no-decision.
Justin Foley '19 (Lynnfield, Mass.) entered the game in the sixth for Bates.Â
Corneil greeted Foley (0-1) with a double to left. The Eagles bunted him to third and a Bates error on another Husson bunt allowed Corneil to score, tying the game at five. Wong singled to left and both runners moved up 90 feet on a Whitten ground out to short.
With runners at second and third and two away, Julien Boone singled home two runs to put Husson up 7-5.
Two more singles loaded the bases and that was it for Foley.
Andrew Freeman '18 (Newton, Mass.) entered the game to face pinch hitter Darik Messier.Â
Freeman struck out Messier looking, ending the inning and keeping the Bobcats within striking distance.
And Bates did get a run back in the seventh. Brendan Fox '17 (West Hartford, Conn.) singled to get the rally going. One out later he advanced to second on a passed ball. The third Husson error of the afternoon allowed MacDonald to reach and Fox to score, cutting the deficit to 7-6. But MacDonald got left stranded at third after a ground out and a foul out ended the inning.
The Eagles' offense would not be denied as they picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Corneil drew a lead-off base-on-balls. One out later, Curran walked and the Eagles pulled off a double steal, putting runners at second and third with only one away. A Wong RBI grounder drove in Corneil to extend the Husson lead to 8-6. Whitten followed with an RBI single, scoring Curran and making the score 9-6 in favor of the Eagles.
After Boone walked, Bates brought in Mark Cunningham '16 (Canton, Mass.) to replace Freeman. Cunningham got Rebar to hit into a fielder's choice, ending the inning.
Steven Hanscom tossed a 1-2-3 eighth for the Eagles out of the bullpen.
Husson closer Ben Holmes struggled a bit with his control in the bottom of the ninth, walking two straight batters to start the inning. Canavan hit a sharp grounder to the right side but Whitten made a diving stop at first and took it to the bag himself for out number one. MacDonald drove in a run with a RBI ground out but Warren flew out to end the game. Holmes picked up his first save of the season.
Bates is back in action Saturday, March 26 as they visit Salem State for a doubleheader starting at noon.Â
