Baseball splits doubleheader with Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team received outstanding pitching from Connor Colombo and Connor Speed on Saturday in a doubleheader split with Salem State. The Bobcats (6-8) dropped game one 1-0 but bounced back to win game two 5-1 over the Vikings (5-8).

Game One: Salem State 1, Bates 0

Alex Toomey's pinch-hit, two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Vikings the only run they needed in a 1-0 win over the Bobcats in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Sean Buckland (3-1) tossed a complete game shutout, going seven innings, allowing only three hits, walking two and striking out seven to pick up the win.

Colombo '16 (Mendon, Mass.) also threw a complete game, pitching six innings, giving up only one run on six hits, walking four and striking out four.

Brendan Fox '17 (West Hartford, Conn.), Eric Vilanova '17 (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Christian Colon '19 (Hamden, Conn.) all picked up hits for the Bobcats.

Bates threatened in the top of the first. With one out John Dinucci '17 (West Hartford, Conn.) got hit by a pitch. But he got picked off and with two outs Conor Reenstierna '16 (Lincoln, Mass.) drew a walk. Fox followed with a single to put two on with two out. Buckland struck out the next Bates hitter to get out of the jam.

The Bobcats went down in order the next three innings and in the bottom of the fourth the Vikings pushed across a run.

Jose Cedano singled to start the frame. He stole second and advanced to third on a Mike Davis single. Colombo retired the next two hitters before walking Teghan Malionek. With the bases loaded and two outs, Alex Toomey pinch hit for Brendan Greene and singled home Cedano, putting the Vikings up 1-0.

Bates couldn't take advantage of a lead-off walk in the fifth and a lead-off single in the sixth. With one out in the seventh, Vilanova singled. But he got left stranded as well as the Vikings took game one.

Game Two: Bates 5, Salem State 1

The Bobcats scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good in a 5-1 victory over the Vikings in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Speed '18 (San Diego, Calif.) was the star of game two, throwing a complete game to pick up the win. He scattered five hits over seven innings, allowing only one run, walking two and striking out seven.

The Vikings got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second. Toomey got things started with a lead-off base-on-balls. Cedano followed with a single and two outs later Zac Duval singled home pinch runner Colton Fontaine to put Salem State up 1-0.

Bates responded right away in the top of the third. Evan Czopek '16 (Portland, Ore.) walked to start the inning. The Bobcats bunted him to second and he advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Ryan McCarthy '17 (Plaistow, N.H.) drew a walk, Colon drove in Czopek, reaching on an RBI fielder's choice to tie the game at one.

The Bobcats chased Salem State starter Mike Richardson (1-3) from the game in their three-run fourth inning. With one away, Dinucci singled and with two away he stole second base. Czopek singled home Dinucci and advanced to second on the throw home. Reed Mszar '18 (Manassas, Va.) singled Czopek to third and McCarthy singled him home to extend the Bates lead to 3-1. Michael Raymond entered the game out of the bullpen and Colon greeted him with an RBI single for his second RBI of the afternoon.

Up 4-1, Bates added another run in the fifth. With two away, Dinucci singled. He stole second base and pinch hitter Berto Diaz '16 (Carson, Calif.) singled him in to put the Bobcats up 5-1.

Speed (2-1) induced a double play to work around a lead-off single in the fifth. He retired the side in order in the seventh and tossed a scoreless seventh to finish off the Vikings.

McCarthy finished game two 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. Colon went 1-3 with two RBIs. Dinucci record a multi-hit game by going 2-3 with two runs scored. Czopek scored a pair of runs while going 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. Bates out-hit the Vikings 9-5 in game two.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday when they visit Endicott. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
