FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Bates women's tennis team fell 8-1 to No. 21 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University on Friday to start play in the Blue-Grey Invitational at the University of Mary Washington.
Junior Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) supplied the lone point for the Bobcats (3-4), defeating Kennedy Mulholland 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans (6-2) swept doubles play, including 8-1 and 8-0 scores at second and third doubles. Bates junior Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and first-year Bella Stone (Concord, Mass.) fell 8-4 at first doubles.
Sophomore Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) put up a good fight at No. 1 singles, falling 6-4, 7-5 to Nithya Kanagasegar in the tightest matchup of the day.
The Bobcats will take on tournament host and 18th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday at 2pm.
