NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The No. 17 Bates men's squash team took home the Summers Cup with a 7-2 win over No. 18 Williams Sunday afternoon at the College Squash Association Team Championships.
This marks the Bobcats'Â first Summers Cup (C Division) title in program history and their first division title of any kind since 2008.Â
Bates (15-7) took control of the match right from the start. At the No. 3 position, Darrius Campbell '17 (St. Stephen, S.C.) defeated the Ephs' John Shuck 3-1 (11-6, 12-14, 14-12, 11-6) and first-year Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) won his fourth match in a row, knocking off David Pincus 3-0 (11-9, 11-9, 11-5) at the No. 6 position. Â
Anirudh Nambiar '18 (Bangalore, India) and junior co-captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) both bounced back from first set losses to win their matches 3-1. Nambiar took down Michael Petrick at the No. 5 position 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 and Burt defeated Mason Elizondo 7-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-9 at the No. 8 position.Â
Two-time All-American Ahmed Hatata '17 (Alexandria, Egypt) clinched the win for Bates with a clean 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 13-11) sweep of John Fitzgerald at the No. 2 position.
With Bates up 5-1, defending individual national champion Ahmed Abdel Khalek '16 (Cairo, Egypt) won his 62nd consecutive match, defeating Jamie Ruggiero 3-1 (11-2, 9-11, 11-4, 11-3) at the No. 1 position.
Carlos Ames '17 (Williamstown, Mass.) picked up a victory at the No. 7 position, knocking off Jamie Havran 3-1 (11-3, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9).Â
Sunday's victory over the Ephs improves upon Bates' 6-3 regular season win over Williams on January 9. Bates finishes the year having won 10 of their final 11 matches. Â Â
This marks the final team match of the year for Bates but a number of Bobcats will participate in the CSA Individual Nationals March 4-6 in Stamford, Conn. Abdel Khalek will get a chance to defend his national championship at individual nationals.Â
