No. 17 men's squash sweeps No. 24 Hobart 9-0 to begin nationals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The No. 17 Bates men's squash team easily took care of No. 24 Hobart by a score of 9-0 in the Summers Cup quarterfinals Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Bobcats (13-7) advance to the semifinals on Saturday to face No. 20 Virginia at 2:00 p.m. 

The match featured the 60th consecutive victory for defending individual national champion Ahmed Abdel Khalek '16 (Cairo, Egypt). He swept Josh Oakley at the No. 1 position 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-7). 

Friday was a rematch of the regular season finale, which Bates won 6-3. Anirudh Nambiar '18 (Bangalore, India) and Carlos Ames '17 (Williamstown, Mass.) bounced back from losses in that match with wins on Friday. Nambiar defeated Terrance Rose at the No. 5 position 3-1 (13-11, 18-20, 11-9, 11-6) and Ames knocked off Divine Wing 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6) at the No. 7 position. 

Two-time All-American Ahmed Hatata '17 (Alexandria, Egypt) and Darrius Campbell '17 (St. Stephen, S.C.) both won in straight sets at the No. 2 and 3 positions respectively. Meanwhile senior co-captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) took care of business at the No. 4 position, winning 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9) over Ilyas Khan.

Youth was served on Friday with first-year Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) continuing to impress with a 3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-5) win at the No. 6 position over Jack Shannon.

Bates' depth was on full display at the No. 8 and No. 9 positions. Junior co-captain Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) took down Danny Cabrera 3-1 (5-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7) and Stefan Joseph '17 (Tortola, British Virgin Islands) emerged victorious at No. 9 with a 3-0 (12-10, 11-1, 11-6) win over Gabriel Garcia.
