Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Graves' hat trick paces women's soccer in 6-1 win over Thomas

Hannah Graves is Bates' first player since 2005 to score three times in a game. (David Graves)

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Hannah Graves had three goals and an assist as Bates women's soccer team peppered visiting Thomas College with 51 shots in a 6-1 non-conference win Thursday at Russell Street Field.

First-year Sarah DiPillo (Medway, Mass.) added a goal and two assists while senior captain Erin Shea (Marshfield, Mass.) and first-year Laura Jarry (Calgary, Alberta) also scored for the host Bobcats (4-8-1), who won their second straight game.

Thomas goalie Paige Leary was kept busy all game long and turned away 23 would-be Bates goals in the defeat.

Kayla Bess scored the lone goal for the Terriers (2-10).

The game got off to an action-packed start, with four goals scored in the first 14 minutes.

Bates took the lead in the sixth minute, as DiPillo got a cross from senior captain Allison Hill (Brunswick, Maine) and carried along the left baseline before delivering a short cross to the right side of the penalty area, where Graves (Weston, Mass.) was able to settle the ball before shooting inside the far post.

Three minutes later it was 2-0, as from the right side of the field Graves passed inside to Shea. Shea had time to shoot toward the far post, and a lunging Thomas defender redirected the ball inside the right post.

But the Terriers halved the deficit just 33 seconds later, as Bess received a pass from Julia Smith on the left and struck the ball inside the far right post to make it 2-1.

Graves and the Bobcats had an answer in the 14th minute, restoring a two-goal lead at 3-1, which the Bobcats took into halftime.

DiPillo gave the Bobcats a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second half, as Thomas goalie Paige Leary and a Bates forward converged on a cross. The hustling DiPillo was first to the loose ball with a hard shot and her second goal of the season.

Graves notched her third goal of the game in the 62nd minute, when she punched in sophomore Olivia Amdur's (Chicago, Ill.) long cross from the left with the bottom of her cleat for a low shot under Leary's reach.

The hat trick is the first by a Bates player since Jessie Gargiulo did it twice in the 2005 season. Graves now has four goals and four assists on the season, tying Amdur for the team lead in each scoring category. Entering the game she had two career goals.

Bates capped off the scoring with Jarry's first career goal. Following a pass from DiPillo, Jarry's low, hard shot found the inside of the far post despite being tipped by Leary.

Junior Sarah McCarthy (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) kept goal for Bates in the first half and made no saves; junior reserve Allegra Sacco (Medway, Mass.) made one saves in a shutout second half.

With two regular-season games left, Bates next plays a NESCAC game Oct. 22 at Middlebury; Thomas will host North Atlantic Conference rival Lyndon State on Saturday at 1:30pm.
