Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hausman's 42 points lead Bowdoin past men's basketball, 84-77

LEWISTON, Maine -- Lucas Hausman scored 42 points, 27 in the second half, to lead Bowdoin College to an 84-77 NESCAC victory over the Bates College men's basketball team Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.

Hausman made 15-of-17 shots from the free-throw line, including 9-of-10 in the second half, and he made 8-of-11 shots from the field in the second period, 11-21 for the game, to finish with half of the Polar Bears' points in the game.

Bowdoin shot 26-60 from the field (.433), 10-24 from three (.417) and 22-26 from the line (.846), better than Bates in all categories. The Bobcats were 27-71 (.380), 10-29 (.345) and 13-20 (.650).

Senior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) scored 20 points with four assists for the Bobcats (8-6, 1-1 NESCAC), who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Bates junior center Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) had 11 of his 12 points in the second half and finished with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, while junior Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) added 15 points and nine boards. Sophomore Shawn Strickland (Middletown, Conn.) had seven points and four assists, while senior Mike Newton (Chapel Hill, N.C.) grabbed eight rebounds.

Matt Palecki had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Bowdoin. Jack Simonds posted a game-high five assists.

Three-pointers by Liam Farley and Tim Ahn ignited a 14-4 Bowdoin run midway through the first period, establishing a 27-18 lead after a Hausman three with 9:09 left in the period. Hausman was fouled attempting a three with under a minute to play and made all three free throws for a 40-29 lead before taking a 40-31 lead into halftime.

Malcolm Delpeche's first two baskets of the game, scored early in the second half, closed the gap to 42-35 before hausman made a layup, a three and a pair of free throws to open a 49-37 Bowdoin lead with 16:34 to go.

After a short hook shot by Malcolm Delpeche, Hugh O'Neil's layup and a pair of foul shots by Hausman expanded Bowdoin's lead to a game-high 53-39 with 14:50 to go.

Newton then sank a three for Bates and a Malcolm Delpeche layup cut the lead back into single digits (53-44).

Simonds rebounded his own miss and made a step-back three in the right corner for a 64-55 Bowdoin lead with 6:58 to go before Bates made a final run. A three by Strickland and a three by sophomore Justin Zukowski (Portland, Maine) capped 10-2 Bates run, cutting it to 66-65 with 5:09 left

With 3:48 to go in the game and the shot clock about to expire, Palecki banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the circle to lift the Polar Bears into a 71-67 lead. Boornazian quickly answered with a three of his own, but with 1:51 to go Hausman's three lifted Bowdoin into a four-point advantage again.

Bates closed the gap to one for a final time with 1:20 remaining, as senior Josh Britten (Yarmouth, Maine) found enough daylight on the left wing to make his only 3-pointer of the half. Bates called timeout, but Hausman, isolated on the perimeter, sank a 17-foot jumper.

Boornazian's three-point attempt at the other end rimmed out, Hausman corralled the rebound and was fouled with 40 seconds to go. The Bowdoin senior sank 1-of-2 free throws, then made both on Bowdoin's next possession, following a missed layup by Newton, to give Bowdoin an 81-75 lead with 28 seconds left.

Bowdoin made three free throws in the final 20 seconds to expand the lead to 84-75 before a final putback by Boornazian made it an 84-77 final.

Bates next plays at Hamilton in another NESCAC game on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7pm.
