Wesleyan uses the three to shoot their way past men's basketball, 82-67

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan University shot the lights out from three and Bates struggled to put the ball in the hoop in an 82-67 loss for the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

Bates (9-9, 3-3 NESCAC) shot only 33.9% from the field and hit just three of 26 threes on the day. Meanwhile the Cardinals (15-4, 3-3 NESCAC) shot a blistering 56.5% from three (13-23) on their way to victory.

BJ Davis was particularly deadly from the field, scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-13 shooting. All seven of his field goals were three-pointers.

Mike Boornazian '16 (Portland, Conn.) led all Bates scorers with 19 points but most of his damage came from making 12 free throws. He shot 3-12 from the floor and 1-6 from three. Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) delivered another solid all-around performance, scoring 11 points on 5-8 shooting and pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.

Bates only scored 11 bench points compared to 32 for the Cardinals. 10 of those 11 points came from Mike Newton '16 (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Newton also hauled in six rebounds, dished out two assists and recorded a game-high three steals.

Marcus Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) and Shawn Strickland '18 (Middletown, Conn.) both finished in double figures with 10 points each. Strickland also delivered a team-high three assists.

Bates never led in the contest as Davis set the tone early with a three.

After a Newton layup, Bates trailed 13-12 with 14:10 to go in the first half. But the Cardinals went on a 13-1 run to extend their lead to 26-13.

Bates pulled to within five with 4:42 to go in the first half on a pair of Boornazian free throws.

But that's as close as they got the remainder of the night. A 14-3 run to end the half put the Cardinals up 42-26.

The Bobcats played a lot better in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals by one point. But the closest they got was to within 10 points on a Strickland jumper with 5:19 left in the game.

Bates looks to snap their three-game losing streak this upcoming Saturday at Tufts. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
