BRUNSWICK, Maine -- No. 8 nationally ranked Bowdoin defeated the 40th-ranked Bates women's tennis team 9-0 in a NESCAC match played in Bowdoin's Farley Field House on Wednesday.

The visiting Polar Bears (8-2, 3-0 NESCAC) picked up their fifth straight victory; the host Bobcats (4-8) lost their fifth straight match -- four of them against nationally ranked opponents (Bowdoin, Tufts, Wesleyan, Brandeis).

Bowdoin set the tone for the afternoon by winning all three doubles matches by 8-1 scores, including Joulia Likhanskaia and Tiffany Cheng's victory at No. 1 doubles over Bates' Elena Mandzhukova and Elizabeth Erbafina. Erbafina played the most competitive singles match of the day, falling 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 to Cheng.

The Bobcats will play at NESCAC rival Connecticut College Saturday at 2pm; Bowdoin plays at Amherst Saturday at 10am.
