WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College edged the No. 40 nationally ranked Bates women's tennis team 5-3 on Thursday in the first match of the fourth annual Nor'easter Bowl.

The host Blue (10-4) won two out of three doubles matches to start, then clinched the team win with Samantha Stone's three-set (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) victory over Bates sophomore Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at No. 4 singles.

Bates first-year Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) was 2-0 on the day, teaming with sophomore Kelsey Pearson (Orange, Calif.) to defeat Caroline Hsu and Emily Olson 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, then defeating Hsu at No. 3 singles, winning by retirement after outscoring Hsu 6-3 in the first set.

Sophomore Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Carina Chen at No. 2 singles -- the Bobcat of the Week's fifth consecutive win at second singles for the Bobcats.

Bates (4-6) will host Tufts in a NESCAC match on Saturday at 10:30am.
