NEW LONDON, Conn. - The No. 39 Bates women's tennis team led 2-1 after doubles competition, but was ultimately edged by Connecticut College, 5-4 Saturday night in NESCAC action at Luce Field House. The Bobcats (4-9, 1-4 NESCAC) moved up a spot in the most recent national rankings released on April 9, jumping from the number 40 to number 39 spots.
Kelsey Pearson (Orange Calif.) and Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) teamed up for the win in number one doubles, defeating Connecticut College's (8-9, 1-3 NESCAC) Adrienne Sieverding and Aleksandra Drljaca, 8-5. Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined for the win in number two doubles over Angelica Warren and Charlotte Marcoux, 8-4. Emma Blakeley (Hope, Maine) and Madeline Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) very nearly earned the Bobcats a sweep in doubles, but came up just short in an 8-6 loss in the number three spot.
Elizabeth Erbafina notched the first win in singles competition for Bates, defeating Charlotte Marcoux in consecutive sets, 7-6, 6-1 in the number two spot. Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) picked up the second point for Bates in singles competition, defeating Angelica Warren in straight sets.
Maisie Silverman took her opponent to three sets in the number one singles spot, falling 7-6 in the first set, but battled back for a 7-5 second set win, before ultimately falling in the third set. Kate Rosenthal also battled to three sets in number three singles competition, jumping out to a 6-1 first set victory, but Adrienne Sieverding bounced back to take the final two sets.
Bates returns to action on April 19 when the team plays host to No. 8 Middlebury College in Lewiston, Maine for a 2:00 p.m. start.
