LEWISTON, Maine - The No. 40 ranked Bates women's tennis nearly pulled off the upset of No. 28 Brandeis University, but ultimately fell, 5-4 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Merrill Gymnasium.
First-year Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) and sophomore Kelsey Pearson (Orange, Calif.) won the lone point in doubles competition for the Bobcats, defeating Dylan Schlesinger and Maya Vasser 9-7 in the number two match-up. The duo of junior Emma Blakeley (Hope, Maine) and sophomore Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) nearly pulled out the win in number three doubles before ultimately falling to Aaron and Sarita Bi Swas, 8-6.
Sophomore Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and Silverman won in consecutive sets out of the number two and three positions in singles battle, while Rosenthal won the fourth point for Bates on the day, battling back from a set down to pick up two consecutive sets and the victory.
The Bobcats are right back in action on Sunday, March 29, playing host to NESCAC rival Wesleyan University at 10:00 a.m. at Merrill Gym in Lewiston, Maine.
