Men's squash tops Colby 8-1, falls 7-2 to Trinity in NESCAC Championships

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates men's squash team will face Middlebury in the third-place match of the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, following Saturday's 8-1 quarterfinal victory over Colby and 7-2 semifinal loss to No. 1 nationally ranked Trinity.

Bates' All-American duo of junior Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) both remained undefeated this season. Abdel Khalek defeated Trinity's No. 1 player, Vrishab Kotian, in straight games for the second time this year, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, to move to 16-0 individually.

At the No. 2 position, Hatata fell behind 1-0 against Miled Zarazua with a pair of 11-9 game losses, but he rebounded to sweep three straight for a thrilling 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 win. Hatata is now 12-0 on the year.

No. 20 nationally ranked Colby provided little resistance against the No. 18 Bobcats in their second meeting this week. Bates scored six of its eight points by 3-0 scores, and won 3-1 for the other two. In addition to Abdel Khalek and Hatata, Bates' points against the Mules came from sophomore Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.), senior Andy Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) at No. 4, junior Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) at No. 6, senior Jason Shrubb (Hamilton, Bermuda) at No. 7, sophomore Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) at No. 8 and sophomore Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) at No. 9.

Bates takes on Middlebury at 11:30am on Sunday at Williams; the Bobcats fell to the Panthers 6-3 on Jan. 24.
