LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's tennis team defeated Smith College 8-1 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Bobcats swept the doubles-competition, giving up only one point in the spring home opener at Merrill Gymnasium, before going on to pick up five victories in singles action.

Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) and Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) combined for the win in number one doubles action, defeating Margaret Anne Smith and Samantha Peikes 8-0, while Kelsey Pearson (Orange, Calif.) and Maisie Silverman (Brunswick, Maine) also won in straight games, 8-0. In number three doubles action Emma Blakely (Hope, Maine) and Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) teamed up for the 8-1 win.

Silverman defeated Kelli Cheung in the number one spot of singles, not giving up a point in straight 6-0 victories. Senior Jordan Dubin picked up the lone point for the Pioneers in the number two spot, defeating Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) 7-6, 6-2. Madeline Stein (Pelham, N.Y.), Jessica Seibold (Cincinnati, Ohio), Alexandra Hakusui (Boxford, Mass.) and Emma Mattson (Dana Point, Calif.) also picked up consecutive set victories on the day.

The Bobcats next host Mount Holyoke College in non-conference action on March 8 at 1:00 p.m.
