BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's squash team defeated Bowdoin for the 25th straight meeting between the rivals on Friday night, prevailing by a 7-2 score.
Bates (3-1) received wins from the top three positions on the ladder, and also picked up points at positions 6 through 9.
National individual champion and Bates senior Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) won his 46th consecutive match, defeating Matthew Cooper 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 at No. 1. Junior two-time All-American Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) and junior Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) also won in straight games at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Bowdoin (1-3) won its points with two five-set victories at 4 and 5, with Benjamin Bristol prevailing over Bates senior captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) and Ian Squiers edging sophomore Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) in back-and-forth contests.
First-year Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) won in three close sets at 6. Fellow freshmen McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) and John Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) picked up wins at 7 and 9, while junior Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) moved to 4-0 with a 3-1 win at 8.
Bates hosts top-ranked NESCAC rival Trinity in the Bobcats' home opener Saturday at noon at the Bates Squash Center (56 Alfred Plourde Parkway, Lewiston).
