CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates men's squash team opened the 2015-16 season by winning two out of three matches over the weekend at the Boston Round Robin, hosted by Harvard. The No. 14 nationally ranked Bobcats downed unranked Stanford 9-0 in their season opener on Friday night, followed on Saturday by a narrow 5-4 loss to No. 18 Brown and a 9-0 victory over No. 20 Wesleyan.
Led by senior national champion
Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt), the Bobcats swept the top three positions on the ladder in all three matches, with Abdel Khalek defeating each opponent's top player in straight games to lift his individual winning streak to 45 matches.
Junior two-time All-American
Ahmed Hatata (Alexandria, Egypt) also earned a sweep of all three of his matches, while at No. 3, junior
Darrius Campbell (St. Stephen, S.C.) surrendered just one game.
In contrast to Bates' wins over Stanford and Wesleyan, the match against Brown was chock-full of closely contested matchups, all of which had the potential of swinging the match. Junior
Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) won in five games at the No. 8 position for Bates, while first-years
McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) and
Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) accepted hard-fought losses at 6 and 7, respectively. Meanwhile first-year
John Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) fell 11-9, 11-8, 11-8 at No. 9.
Abdel Khalek, Hatata, Campbell and Burt all went 3-0 on the day.
Bates next plays at rival Bowdoin on Friday, Dec. 4 at 6pm, before hosting Trinity the following day at noon.
