LEWISTON, Maine -- Befitting Senior Night,
Nabil Saleem,
Andy Cannon and
Jason Shrubb all swept their opponents, as did the rest of the Bates lineup, as the No. 14 nationally ranked Bobcat men's squash team downed Tufts 9-0 on Tuesday at the Bates Squash Center. Bates won all 27 games in the match.
Bates rose to 8-4, while Tufts dropped to 2-6.
In addition to Senior Night, prior to the match the Bates Squash Center's new glass-walled sixth court was dedicated. The facility's spectator area has also been reconfigured and improved this year.
Junior Ahmed Abdel Khalek (Cairo, Egypt) remained undefeated since his freshman season, defeating Tufts' Aditya Advani 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 at the No. 1 position on the ladder. Saleem (Alpharetta, Ga.) played at No. 2 and swept Braden Chiulli, while fellow captain Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) put away Sandeep Rishi at No. 3, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. Shrubb (Hamilton, Bermuda) played at No. 5 and won by nearly the same score, 11-4, 11-7, 11-5, over Alexander Goodrich.Â
Also registering victories on the night were junior captain Caran Arora (Mumbai, India) at No. 4, sophomore Carlos Ames (Williamstown, Mass.) at No. 6, sophomore Spencer Burt (Portland, Ore.) at No. 7, sophomore Creighton Foulkes (Belmont, Mass.) at No. 8 and first-year Anirudh Nambiar (Bangalore, India) at No. 9.
The Bobcats (8-4) have two remaining home matches, against Bowdoin on Jan. 30 (5pm) and against MIT on Jan. 31 (5pm). They next travel to the Middlebury Round Robin on Jan. 24 to face Franklin & Marshall at 9am and Middlebury at 3pm.
