MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bates women's tennis team's 2014 season likely came to a close on Sunday at Wesleyan University, where the host Cardinals dealt the Bobcats a 7-2 defeat.
Bates finishes the year with a 7-9 overall record and a 2-5 mark in NESCAC play, following a 6-1 start. Wesleyan rose to 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
The Bobcats will still hope to land a bid in the singles or doubles portions of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.
Junior Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) figured in both of the Bobcats' team points. Mandzhukova finished out an impressive third season playing No. 1 singles for the Bobcats with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Cardinals' Clare DuBrin. That came after she teamed up with first-year standout Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) for an 8-5 win over Grace Smith and Olivia Koh at No. 1 doubles.
Playing in their last matches for Bates were senior captains Lucy Brennan (Freeport, Maine) and Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.).
