Early rally lifts baseball past Endicott, 8-4

BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior Rockwell Jackson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, senior Griff Tewksbury notched three RBIs, and Bates College baseball beat Endicott College, 8-4, at North Field on Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats (14-11) took a 6-0 lead over the Gulls (21-10) after the top of the second inning and did not trail the rest of the way. The Gulls currently rank seventh in the latest New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Poll.

First-year right-hander Anthony Telesca (Holtsville, N.Y.) went five innings in the start, striking out two while allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits in his first career win. Sophomore Connor Colombo (Mendon, Mass.), junior Aidan Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine), and sophomore Rob DiFranco (Melrose, Mass.) held the Gulls to one hit and no runs over four innings of relief.

Endicott starter Tyler Hill (4-2) took the loss, giving up eight runs, all earned, on nine hits over 4.2 innings. Gull relievers Luke Morse, Colby Morris, and Steve Morganelli did not allow a run.

After Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) scored a run in the top of the first, the Bobcats struck five times in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Senior Steve Burke (Bedford, N.H.), sophomore Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.), and senior Jeff Gunn (Lilburn, Ga.) each reached base safely to load the bases, Jackson singled into center field, putting Bates up 2-0.

Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) then came to the plate two batters later and emptied the bases with a double to left center to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead. Senior Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) followed with a single to right which plated Tewksbury for the inning's final run.

Endicott plated a run in the bottom of the fourth off a single from EJ Martinez, but the Bobcats responded for another two runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Gunn doubled home the team's first run in the inning before Jackson brought Gunn home with a single to center field.

The Gulls then cut their deficit to 8-4 with three runs – all with two outs – in the last half of the fifth. Tad Gold brought in a run with a single to center, and Brett Holmgren followed with a single up the middle which plated another two runners.

Next, Bates plays a doubleheader at Husson University on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
