WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates women's tennis team split the six singles matches with No. 22 nationally ranked Brandeis University, but the host Judges prevailed 6-3 on the strength of a doubles sweep Friday afternoon.
Bates' (7-6) final non-conference match of the season featured dominant wins by first-years Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) and Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) at third and sixth singles, respectively. Both Bobcat freshmen surrendered only one game in their respective victories over Roberta Bergstein and Alexa Katz.
Senior captain Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) recorded a 6-3, 7-6 (6-3) victory over Emily Eska in the final singles match to be decided on the day.
Brandeis (9-8), ranked 22nd nationally and ninth in the Northeast in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll, sealed the victory with its fifth point, when Carley Cooke finished a 7-5, 6-0 win over Bates junior Elena Mandzhukova (Lisbon, Portugal) at No. 1 singles.
Two of Brandeis' three doubles wins came via 8-6 scores: Erbafina and Mandzhukova fell 8-6 to Bergstein and Cooke, while Voccola and senior captain Lucy Brennan (Freeport, Maine) were defeated by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
The Bobcats return to NESCAC play Saturday with a 4pm match at Tufts.
