Reynolds pitches well, baseball falls to Tufts, 2-0

MEDFORD, Mass. – Senior left-hander Brad Reynolds allowed just two runs on three hits over six innings, but Bates College baseball fell to Tufts, 2-0, in the NESCAC East Division opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field.

The Jumbos (12-1, 1-0 NESCAC East) scored twice in the top of the first and held the Bobcats (5-8, 0-1 NESCAC East), the designated home team, to four hits in the shutout.

Tufts starter Kyle Slinger (4-0) struck out 11 batters over seven innings and allowed just three hits. Tim Superko earned his first save of the year, pitching two innings in relief and conceding one hit and one walk.

Reynolds (Lafayette, Colo.) fanned seven batters but fell to 1-1 on the year. Sophomore Rob DiFranco (Melrose, Mass.) and senior Dean Bonneau (Amherst, Mass.) combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief holding the Jumbos hitless and recording five and one strikeouts respectively.

With one out in the top of the first, Tufts' Nick Barker singled to left field and advanced to second on a balk. Wade Hauser then brought him in with an RBI double down the left field line. Max Freccia followed with a double of his own – this one down the right field line – to plate Hauser, and the Jumbos took a 2-0 lead which they would not relinquish.

Slinger retired the first 12 batters he faced, and Reynolds faced 13 batters over the next four innings as the teams entered the bottom of the fifth.

Junior Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) broke up Slinger's perfect game with a leadoff double in the fifth, but after a walk from junior Nate Pajka (Douglas, Mass.) Slinger induced a fielder's choice and then a double play to get out of the inning.

Bates threatened again in the last half of the sixth as senior Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) hit a two-out single to left. Tewksbury made his way to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball, and two Bobcats walked to load the bases before Berry struck out to end the inning.

The Bobcats had originally planned to host the Jumbos but could not due to field conditions.

Next, Bates will play two more games with Tufts tomorrow, weather permitting, before heading to Endicott on Tuesday for a game at 4 p.m.
