Baseball bests Old Westbury, 7-2, for series sweep

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Three Bates relievers combined to pitch five scoreless innings, and the Bobcats plated four runs in the top of the seventh as Bates College baseball beat SUNY Old Westbury, 7-2, at Gregg Alfrano Field on Sunday.

The Bobcats (4-6) swept the three-game series with the Panthers (2-11) after picking up wins of 3-2 and 14-9 yesterday.

Senior right-hander Dean Bonneau (Amherst, Mass.) earned the win, entering in the fifth and throwing three innings of two-hit baseball. After Bonneau got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, first-year Anthony Telesca (Holtsville, N.Y.) faced four batters in the eighth, and junior Sam Maliska (Palo Alto, Calif.) faced five in the ninth to seal the win.

Senior Jeff Gunn (Lilburn, Ga.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Bates while sophomore Samuel Warren (Norfolk, Va.) and senior Kevin Davis (North Andover, Mass.) each recorded 2-for-5 efforts at the plate.

Old Westbury starter Frank DiMaria (0-2) gave up five runs and struck out five over 6.2 innings in the loss. Third baseman John Angelino knocked in both runs for the hosts.

The Panthers struck first in the bottom of the fourth as Angelino hit a double into right field scoring Kevin Licul and Nick Yip to give Old Westbury a 2-0 lead.

Bates cut its deficit in half in the next frame as Gunn led off the inning with a single, and first-year Brendan Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) eventually plated him with a sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless sixth, the Bobcats made their move in the top of the seventh. Warren started the rally with a single, and with one out, Gunn knocked him home with a single up the middle. With the bases loaded, senior Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) doubled in a pair of runs to push the visitors' lead from 3-2 to 5-2.

The Bobcats added runs in the eighth and ninth, including a sacrifice fly from junior Sam Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) after classmate Rockwell Jackson (Fort Worth, Texas) tripled to right center in the top of the ninth.

Bates junior right-handed starter Will Levangie (Frederick, Md.) struck out three, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings.

Next, Bates plays at Salem State on Saturday in a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m.
