ORANGE, Calif. – Bates College women's tennis fell to Chapman University, 9-0, on Wednesday evening at the Chapman Tennis Courts in the second match of the team's three-match California trip.
The Panthers (3-1) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the Bobcats (1-1) in doubles play.
In doubles, senior Kristen Doerer (Madison, Conn.) and first-year Kate Rosenthal (Pittsburgh, Pa.) played the closest match for the visitors before dropping an 8-6 decision on court No. 2 to Sophia Duong and Madeline Saunders.
First-year Elizabeth Erbafina (Sudbury, Mass.) nearly earned a point for the Bobcats in third singles with an eventual, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7, loss to Duong. Doerer almost won her second set on court No. 4, falling to Saunders, 6-1, 7-6.
Next, Bates concludes its California swing at Whittier College on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
